In Gen 16 we read about Hagar who in obedience to her mistress consented to bear a child for Abraham. When she became pregnant, Sarah complained that she was despised by Hagar Abraham replied, “Your servant is in your hands. Do with her whatever you think best”. Sarah began to mistreat her and Hagar fled from her. There was no one to support a woman whose only fault was obedience to her mistress. But the Lord found her in a desert and asked “Hager, servant of Sarah where have you come from and where are you going?” God pinpointed the fact that she should be at her responsibility as a servant of Sarah. The question is exactly similar to ‘Adam where are you?” when Hagar owned the fact that she was running away from her post God gave a solution. “Go back to your mistress and submit to her……. The Lord has heard your misery” Then Hagar said “ you are the God who sees me …….. I have seen the one who sees me.
The Lord met Hagar in the desert, in her desperate situation. She was made to do something and was hated for the very same thing. Sarah thought that Hagar despised her. It might have been an imaginary offense blown out of proportion by the mistress who saw her maid accomplish what she could not do. Whatever it may, God saw the distress of Hagar and helped her out of the situation. Even while the consequences of such action may bear adverse results, God helps the helpless. He saw the suffering of Hagar who was driven to desperate decision for no fault of hers. God sees the heart whereas man sees the external behaviors.
