In Luke 2;25-38 we read about a devout Christmas character of whom not much is discussed during Christmas season. No skit portrays him during these days. Yet, he is a powerful character who stands before us as a model for all that Christianity represents.
Simeon who was ‘righteous and devout’ was waiting eagerly for the birth of Jesus. Since he was devout, the Holy Spirit revealed to him the exact time when the baby would be in the Temple. Revelation comes to those who seek it. We read that he went to the Temple moved by the Spirit. What a privilege for an old man who must have waited in eagerness to see the saviour of the world. During Christmas season we need to examine our life. Do we thirst for an encounter with our Redeemer? Are we led by the Spirit to places where our desire to meet our saviour will be fulfilled? It is in the quietness of our heart that we can meet Him. If our heart is agitated and crowded with insignificant things we may miss the promptings of the Spirit. Simeon could respond to the direction of the Spirit because his heart was not cluttered with unimportant details.
When we are in right standing with God and lead a life pleasing to Him we will find Him and we will be guided by the Holy Spirit. When we enjoy this personal intimacy with God He will lead us to great spiritual experiences.
Simeon’s dream of seeing the baby was fulfilled and as he held the baby in his hands he felt that his long term desire had been fulfilled and he wanted to be ‘dismissed in Peace’. His only passion was seeing Jesus. Celebration of Christmas must give us this passion to carry Jesus in our life. We also need to make a decision to lead a righteous and devout life as Simeon did so that our life also will be guided by the Holy Spirit.
Simeon not only enjoyed seeing the baby but also prophesied about Mary. He saw into the future and predicted a hard time for Mary. His commitment gave him special powers. Even in his old age, his life was fruitful; yes, age need not be a discouraging factor for those who are empowered by God. Simeon with his devotion and dedication stands as an inspiring character during Christmas season.
May God give us the grace to lead a devout and righteous life like Simeon and grant us the privilege to be led by the Holy Spirit in this new year.
