Anna, a prophet, was also there in the Temple. She was the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, and was very old. She was a widow, for her husband had died when they had been married only seven years.
She was now eighty-four years old. She never left the Temple but stayed there day and night, worshiping God with fasting and prayer. She came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph, and she began praising God. She talked about Jesus to everyone who had been waiting for the promised King to come and deliver Jerusalem. — Luke 2:36-38
Anna was not like most women of her time. She chose a different path. She chose to remain single and share her faith to many. She chose to serve the Lord, fast and pray. Others opinions did not dilute her commitment.
Staying in the temple denotes single-minded devotion to God. Even when we are involved in various activities our focus can be pleasing God.
There must have been moments of frustration in Anna’s life. The long awaited saviour also took a long time to show up but she never gave up, But because of the delay she was able to share the message of salvation with many.
Waiting did not wear out her determination. Neither did it disturb her focus.
Her strength of mind is commendable. She was strong enough to be focused on her mission. No other pursuit looked worthy enough to get her attention.
She was not comforted by company. Neither was her spiritual inclination supported by a band of believers. All alone she fasted and prayed. That shows a greater steadfast commitment.
She stayed in the temple day and night. She was determined about her priority. Her priority was to be in the presence of God. Being in the presence of God means living in total obedience to His will, Her sole delight was leading a life that was pleasing to God., She was able to see baby Jesus because she was in the temple. Our commitment and sincerity takes us closer to God. Finally Anna’s devotion brought to her a great reward.
A life dedicated to heavenly pursuit has its rewards May her example inspire us to lead a more focused life looking forward to the second coming of the Lord of lords and the King of kings
